This would not happen to an A-CAR certified business

There was a huge fire at a wrecking yard in Melbourne last week. Eight people were evacuated from the factory. One of them was taken to hospital with facial burns. The fire was fueled by a “load of rubber tyres and really old disbanded cars”, the assistant chief fire officer at the scene said. “Lots of black dirty smoke, a really hard-running fire, and it was quite a challenge early on,” he said.

“When the smoke was about 100 to 120-feet high (30-36 metres), well the flames within that smoke were at least that high, so we were settling in for
a long fire fight.”

Earlier there were more than 100 firefighters on the scene trying to extinguish the flames.

There will be major Worksafe and EPA investigations into the blaze.

COULD YOUR BUSINESS SURVIVE THIS? For many this would be the end of the line.

The A-CAR (AUSTRALIAN CERTIFIED AUTOMOTIVE RECYCLER) program ensures that members are supported and assisted to review their business processes, look for hazards and mitigate identified risks. This would not happen to an A-CAR business.

Implementing good business practices may seem obvious, but its not. It needs to be worked at. Most businesses can benefit from a helping hand.

There are three stages in becoming a fully compliant  ‘A-CAR’ Member:

Year 1 – Achieve Environmental compliance – removing oils, fluids and refrigerant and having these collected by a licensed collector;
Year 2 – Achieve workplace Health & Safety compliance;
Year 3 – Achieve Business practice and Consumer protection compliance.

We work with you step by step through this process providing guidance and support. We will ensure that every business that wants to meet the program standards is supported and assisting in achieving this.

WHAT IS THE GREATEST CHALLENGE OUR INDUSTRY FACES? It is the unequal playing field professional and compliant businesses must operate in.

HOW DO GOVERNMENT AGENCIES, OR THE PUBLIC, DISTINGUISH A COMPLIANT BUSINESS FROM A “BACK YARDER”? It is only by good businesses standing up and telling the community they are compliant, they are professional, they respect the environment, they ensure the safety of their staff and they adhere to consumer protection standards.

IT’S NOT JUST ENOUGH TO DO THE RIGHT THING – WE NEED BUSINESSES TO SHOW THE WORLD THEY ARE DOING THE RIGHT THING.
